HOW FATIGUE AFFECTS DRIVING

How fatigue affects driving- Fatigue is a crucial factor that contributes to severe road accidents, studies have proven that close to 25% of deadly road accidents are caused due to driver’s fatigue. 

Back in the year 2013, drowsy driving was accountable for an approximated 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths globally. According to a recent report, 60% of adults confessed to driving while exhausted, while 37% acknowledged to have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

Sleepy or fatigued driving is harmful as it stalls reaction times, it deforms information processing and diminishes vigilance.  Driving while you’re feeling drowsy is not illegal, but it can have devastating aftermaths for yourself and other road users.

WHY DO PEOPLE FALL ASLEEP WHILE DRIVING

The various reasons that cause people to fall asleep are listed below: 

  • Untreated sleeping disorders
  • Genuine fatigue from a vigorous activity
  • Depression
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Diabetes
  • Medication that could make you drowsy
  • Anaemia
  • Tiredness from driving for long hours without rest
  • Thyroid issues
  • Deprived sleep for lengthy hours

WAYS TO PREVENT FATIGUE WHILE DRIVING

The easiest way to avoid drowsiness is to take a “power nap” for 30 minutes to an hour before beginning a long trip, you can also take a nap between the trips. Still, before taking a nap, ensure you are parked in a safe location.

The other ways to prevent fatigue while driving are listed below:

  • Ensure you get adequate rest before leaving for a long trip
  • Ensure you stay hydrated
  • Ask other passengers to keep you  concentrated and aware if your surroundings
  • Take turns while driving with a co-driver if possible
  • Ensure you stop for regular breaks at least every two hours
  • Avoid drinking alcohol before your trip
  • Take a break after 8 hours of driving a day
